The 2010 Atlanta Caribbean Jerk Festival and Family Fun Day will give residents of Metro Atlanta the opportunity to experience the best in Caribbean culture and cuisine. Festivals centered on the preparation and cooking of jerk seasoned foods have been hugely successful throughout North America and the Caribbean. The 2009 staging of the Atlanta Caribbean Jerk Festival attracted thousands of patrons, over 30 vendors and several sponsors. Featured activities included jerk preparation demonstrations, the crowning of Atlanta’s Jerk chicken champion, spoken word, live reggae and calypso bands, a kiddies' playground, games tent, and domino tournaments…something for the entire family. This year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever!
Glen Simmonds Events, Carib Event Partners and MCMG Inc in association with the Atlanta Montego Bay Sister Cities Foundation, are pleased to present the Fifth Annual Atlanta Caribbean Jerk Festival and Family Fun Day on Sunday, September 5, 2010 (the day before Labor Day) from 12 noon to 11 pm. Organized as a multi-cultural community event, the festival will be held at Panthersville Stadium located 2817 Clifton Springs Road in Decatur, Georgia.
The event will feature live reggae and soca bands, award winning Caribbean DJs, a Kids Fun Zone, a Caribbean heritage village, soccer tournament, cricket demonstration, a games tent, and a domino tournament. The festival will present competitive “jerk” grilling contests to determine who has Atlanta’s best jerk chicken and jerk pork.
After being a two time Top Jerk Chef winner in 2006 and 2007, and being relegated to the runner up position in 2008, Everton Welch staged a spirited come back in 2009 when he nipped reigning Top Jerk Chef Steve Lopez to claim the top prize. The judges were equally impressed by Mr. Welch’s and Mr. Lopez’ succulent, innovative and creative culinary presentations. In the end, Everton Welch regained the title of Atlanta’s Top Jerk Chef 2009 by the closest of margins. This ultra competitive cook-off competition is a major highlight of the festival where established and aspiring chefs compete for cash, trophies and most importantly bragging rights. A new addition to the 2010 Atlanta Caribbean Jerk festival will be a celebrity cook off challenge.
